Buddhist Funeral Services

Buddhism is a non-theistic religion that focuses on the cycle of life, death, and rebirth known as samsara. Buddhists believe that how one lives their life will determine their future reincarnation. The ultimate goal is to achieve enlightenment and escape the cycle of rebirth.

When a Buddhist passes away, the rituals and customs surrounding their funeral are meant to help guide the deceased's spirit to a favorable rebirth.

Beliefs About Death

Buddhists see death as a natural part of the cycle of life. They believe the soul or spirit remains close by after death while it seeks a new body for rebirth. The quality of one's next life is determined by the karma, or good and bad deeds, accumulated in this life.

Family and friends are encouraged to remain calm and serene during the dying process. They can remind the person of the good they have done in their life to help them have a positive rebirth. It is important the dying person be made as comfortable as possible to pass peacefully.

Funeral Rites

Buddhist funeral rites follow a specific set of traditions:

  • The body should not be touched, moved or disturbed for at least 4 hours after death, as the soul is believed to still be present.
  • The body is then bathed, dressed in everyday clothes, and placed in a simple open casket.
  • The casket is surrounded by flowers, candles, incense, and images of the deceased and Buddha.
  • Buddhist monks are often invited to lead chants, prayers, and sermons during the funeral service.
  • Mourners may participate in rituals like offering cloth to the monks, pouring water into an overflowing cup, and walking with sticks for support.
  • Cremation is the preferred method of disposition, as it is seen as freeing the soul from the body. Cremation is typically delayed until the 7th day after death.

Mourning Period

Buddhist mourning customs often involve multiple services over an extended period:

  • Services may be held on the 3rd, 7th, 49th, and 100th day after the death.
  • Family members wear white clothing as a sign of grief. Elaborate or flashy attire is avoided.
  • Visiting the gravesite and making offerings are common practices during the mourning period.

Overall, Buddhist funeral services focus on honoring the deceased, guiding their spirit, and supporting the grieving family - all within the context of their beliefs about the cycle of life, death, and rebirth.

General Funeral Services

While the specific rituals may differ, most funeral services share common elements regardless of religious or cultural background:

Viewing/Visitation

Family and friends are often given the opportunity to view the deceased and pay their respects, either at a funeral home or place of worship. This allows the community to come together and support the grieving family.

Funeral Ceremony

The funeral ceremony is the central event where the life of the deceased is honored and celebrated. This may include eulogies, readings, music, and other tributes. The ceremony is often officiated by a religious or community leader.

Disposition of Remains

The deceased's remains are then transported to the place of final disposition, whether that be burial, cremation, or another method. Family and friends may accompany the casket or urn in a funeral procession.

Reception/Gathering

After the funeral, it is common for the family to host a reception or gathering where mourners can continue to offer condolences and share memories of the deceased. This provides an important opportunity for community support.

Ongoing Remembrance

In many traditions, there are ongoing ways to remember and honor the deceased, such as visiting the gravesite, holding memorial services, or making charitable donations in their name. These continued rituals can help the grieving process.

Regardless of one's religious or cultural background, funeral services serve the important purpose of allowing the community to come together, grieve the loss, and celebrate the life of the deceased.
