What Condition Is the Car In?

Start with what the car can physically do.

The Car Won't Start but Can Still Roll

Starting and rolling are separate questions. A dead engine does not lock the wheels by itself. Say whether the wheels turn freely. The collector can then judge the loading method.

The Car Will Not Roll or Has Seized Wheels

Seized brakes and locked wheels stop the wheels from turning. Flat tyres change how the car sits on the ground. Missing wheels remove the rolling base altogether.

The Car Cannot Be Steered

Locked steering keeps the front wheels pointing one way. Damaged steering and accident damage change the way the car turns. Steering condition affects positioning for loading.

The Car Has No Keys or Is Incomplete

Keys and steering are separate conditions. Report missing keys as their own fact. GOV.UK says an ATF can charge a fee when owners remove essential parts. The examples include the engine, gearbox, bodywork and wheels. 

How Is a Non-Running Car Collected?

A recovery vehicle carries a car that cannot drive itself. A winch uses a cable to pull the car onto the vehicle. The loading method depends on the car and the access. When Additional Recovery Equipment Applies

Some conditions push a collection beyond a standard load.

The recovery provider picks the equipment. Do not tow, lift, or winch the car yourself.

Does the Collection Location Make a Difference?

Access is part of the collection plan.

Driveways, Gates and Private Access

A recovery vehicle needs a route to the car. Narrow driveways, gates, parked vehicles, bins, low-clearance entrances and private tracks can block the route. Measure the gate width and the entrance height. Clear bins and parked vehicles where reasonably possible.

Garages and Tight Spaces

Garage width and height set the limits. Check that the door opens fully. Note whether the car can roll out. Other vehicles in the way need moving first. Photographs of the car and the route help the collector.

Difficult Parking Locations

Underground car parks, slopes and confined spaces limit access. Boxed-in cars and locked access add more limits. Name any access rules and a contact person. Book the collection only after the collector confirms the plan.

What About Damaged, Incomplete, Electric or Hybrid Cars?

Accident Damaged or Incomplete Cars

Serious accident damage, seized engines, and long unused vehicles need clear disclosure. Describe what you see, not what you think is wrong.

GOV UK says insurance write-offs follow a different process. GOV UK allows owners to remove parts to repair another vehicle they own. It requires a SORN while parts come off. Parts removal must not pollute the environment. 

Electric and Hybrid Cars

Identify an electric or hybrid car when arranging collection. HSE reports up to 650 volts direct current, against 12 or 24 volts in other vehicles. Accidental contact with live parts above 110 volts can be fatal in dry conditions. Leave every step to trained recovery personnel.

HSE tells recovery workers to check for damage to orange high-voltage cabling. HSE says workers move the remote key away and disconnect the standard battery. HSE says to avoid towing these cars unless safe. Drive wheel movement can generate dangerous voltages.

GOV UK says scrapping at an ATF is usually free. The ATF pays the scrap value of the vehicle. Cash payment is illegal for scrap in England or Wales. Payment goes by bank transfer or cheque. Recovery and collection charges depend on the provider. Ask which of these factors apply to your car.

When Should You Contact the Collector Before Moving the Car?

What Happens After the Car Is Collected?

1. Collection from the agreed address.

2. Transport to an ATF, the only lawful place to scrap the vehicle. 

3. Treatment, where depollution removes fuels, oils, coolants, brake fluids, batteries and airbags. 

4. A certificate of destruction within 7 days for a completely scrapped car, light van or 3-wheeled motor vehicle. 

5. DVLA notification from the keeper, with a £1,000 fine for failing to tell DVLA.
