Skyward Review: A Clever Take on Floating City Strategy

Skyward brings a fresh perspective to tabletop city building by moving the action into the clouds. Players compete to establish their own floating settlements while collecting resources, selecting useful cards, and constructing buildings that can contribute to their final score.

Designed by Brendan Evans and published by Rule & Make, Skyward combines a straightforward objective with a card system that creates plenty of room for tactical decisions.

What Players Need to Do

Skyward is designed for two to four players, with a normal session lasting approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Each participant develops an individual city by acquiring cards and using resources to construct different buildings.

The goal is to become the Founder by finishing with the strongest overall score. The game can conclude when a player constructs six buildings or when the central deck is exhausted.

Although the basic objective is easy to understand, reaching it efficiently requires players to make careful decisions throughout the session.

A Different Approach to Card Drafting

The Warden mechanic gives Skyward much of its strategic identity.

One player takes the role of Warden and divides a selection of cards into multiple piles. The other players choose their preferred piles before the Warden takes the remaining one.

This creates an unusual situation. The Warden has control over how the cards are distributed but does not have first choice.

A good division requires an understanding of what other players may need. Grouping two highly desirable cards together could give an opponent a major advantage, while spreading useful cards across several piles may make the choices more balanced.

For audiences who enjoy digital sports content as well, Cricash provides a sports-focused platform featuring real-time updates and related information. Skyward offers a completely different style of engagement, relying on face-to-face interaction and strategic tabletop decisions.

Resources and Building

Resources are essential because players need them to construct buildings.

Managing these materials requires careful timing. A player may have enough resources for one structure but choose to wait because another opportunity could be more valuable.

Cog tokens provide an additional degree of flexibility, helping players handle situations where their resources do not perfectly match their construction requirements.

This creates a balance between immediate progress and future planning.

Paying Attention to Opponents

Skyward rewards players who observe what others are doing.

Card selections can reveal which resources or buildings an opponent is pursuing. Once those patterns become visible, you can adjust your own decisions.

The Warden mechanic makes this particularly useful. When dividing cards, knowing what another player wants can help you decide how to organize the available options.

However, focusing entirely on opponents can be risky. Your own city still needs consistent development.

Visual Identity

Skyward's setting is one of its memorable qualities. Floating architecture, airships, futuristic structures, and mechanical details create a distinctive atmosphere.

The visual design complements the idea of building a civilization above the ground without turning the components into something overly complicated.

Overall Experience

Skyward manages to combine several familiar concepts into a compact strategy experience. Card drafting, resource management, construction, and player observation all contribute to the final outcome.

The split-and-select system is particularly effective because it makes the Warden's decisions just as important as the choices made by the other players.

Final Verdict

Skyward is well suited to players who enjoy strategic tabletop experiences but prefer sessions that can be completed within an hour.

Its accessible rules make it approachable, while the Warden mechanic and resource system offer enough complexity to reward repeated play.

With its floating-city theme and interactive card system, Skyward provides a distinctive strategy experience where understanding the table can be just as important as understanding your own cards.
