Polybutadiene Rubber (PBR) Market Outlook: Supply Disruptions and Feedstock Costs Shape Q2 2026
The global Polybutadiene Rubber market went through a noticeable change during the second quarter of 2026. The market started the quarter with strong upward pressure as supply chains faced disruptions and the availability of important raw materials became less certain. Butadiene, one of the main feedstocks used in PBR production, became more expensive as regional trade flows were affected by geopolitical developments and problems around the Strait of Hormuz.
Crude oil also played an important role in the market during this period. Oil prices moved higher during the early part of the quarter, increasing the cost of several petrochemical feedstocks. Since PBR is closely connected to the petrochemical value chain, higher raw material and energy costs quickly affected production economics. Producers therefore had stronger reasons to maintain higher selling offers.
The market was not driven by supply concerns alone. Demand from industries such as tires, automotive components, footwear, industrial rubber products, and other applications continued to provide support. At the same time, buyers became more careful about their purchasing decisions because they were unsure how long the supply disruptions would continue. Some buyers increased their inventories earlier in the quarter to avoid facing higher replacement costs later.
Supply Problems Put Pressure on the Market
One of the main factors behind the stronger market was the disruption to the movement of feedstocks. The situation around the Strait of Hormuz created uncertainty for petrochemical shipments and increased concerns about the availability of raw materials.
Butadiene availability became particularly important because it is a key input for PBR production. When the supply of butadiene becomes tighter, manufacturers can face higher production costs even when their own plants are operating normally. This creates a direct connection between feedstock availability and the final rubber market.
Higher freight rates also added another layer of pressure. When shipping becomes more expensive or vessels have to take longer routes, the landed cost of imported rubber increases. Buyers in import-dependent countries then have to pay more to replace their inventories.
The combination of higher crude oil costs, expensive feedstocks, freight increases, and supply uncertainty created a strong cost environment during the first part of Q2 2026.
India Market Sees a Strong Increase
The Indian market recorded one of the sharpest movements during the quarter. The PBR market in India increased by more than 55% compared with the previous quarter. Several factors came together to create this strong rise.
At the beginning of Q2, crude oil prices were moving higher, which pushed up the cost of petrochemical feedstocks. At the same time, restrictions affecting naphtha flows from South Korea reduced the availability of an important feedstock for Indian buyers.
Lower naphtha availability had an indirect effect on butadiene production. Since butadiene is required for PBR manufacturing, reduced availability created additional pressure on the rubber supply chain. This made it more difficult for buyers to secure material at earlier price levels.
Currency movement also made the situation more challenging for Indian importers. The Indian rupee reached a record low during the period, increasing the local cost of imported material. Even if an overseas supplier kept its offer unchanged, the weaker currency could still make the product more expensive for an Indian buyer.
As a result, domestic replacement costs increased considerably. Suppliers were able to maintain firm offers because buyers were dealing with limited availability and higher import costs.
However, the situation changed toward the end of the quarter. The improvement in feedstock flows and easing supply pressure allowed the Indian market to move lower. In June, PBR prices in India corrected by around 12%. This decline did not completely erase the earlier increase, but it showed that the market was beginning to move toward more balanced conditions.
China Market Also Records a Sharp Rise
China experienced a strong increase during Q2 2026, with the market rising by around 28% compared with Q1. The initial rise was mainly connected with tighter availability of material from South Korea.
South Korea is an important source of petrochemical products for regional markets. When naphtha flows became restricted, butadiene availability was affected. This created concerns among buyers about the availability of PBR and encouraged a stronger procurement approach.
The supply situation was made more difficult by the wider geopolitical uncertainty. Disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz affected shipping routes and increased the cost of transporting goods. Freight charges and marine insurance expenses also moved higher, adding to the landed cost of imported material.
For Chinese buyers, this meant that replacement material could become considerably more expensive. Producers and suppliers therefore had greater scope to increase offers, particularly while feedstock costs were still elevated.
Demand from tire manufacturing and other rubber-consuming industries provided additional support. Although buyers remained cautious, regular consumption meant that companies still needed to replenish stocks. This helped prevent a quick decline in the market during the first two months of the quarter.
Market Conditions Improve in June
The second half of the quarter brought a different picture. Toward the end of Q2, geopolitical tensions started to ease, while efforts to restore normal trade flows helped improve shipping conditions.
The easing of tensions around the US-Iran situation and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz reduced some of the pressure on crude oil, feedstocks, and transportation costs. This had a direct impact on the PBR supply chain.
For buyers, improved availability meant they did not need to compete as aggressively for limited cargoes. Suppliers also faced less pressure from rapidly increasing feedstock and freight expenses.
In India, the market corrected by approximately 12% in June. China also recorded a correction of around 10% during the same month. The Chinese decline was supported by improved supply flows from South Korea and lower pressure across the wider market.
This does not necessarily mean that the entire market had returned to its earlier price levels. The quarterly increase remained significant, and production costs were still higher than they had been before the disruption. Instead, the June correction can be viewed as a move toward greater balance after a period of unusually strong price increases.
Demand Remains an Important Market Factor
Apart from supply and feedstock costs, demand remains an important factor for the PBR market. The tire industry is one of the major consumers of polybutadiene rubber, so changes in tire production can have a noticeable effect on overall demand.
Automotive manufacturing also influences the market because PBR is used in various rubber components and applications connected with vehicles. When automotive production and tire replacement activity remain healthy, rubber manufacturers continue to require regular supplies.
During Q2 2026, demand remained sufficient to support the market even as buyers became more cautious. Companies were still required to maintain production schedules, which meant that purchasing could not be stopped completely.
This helped suppliers maintain stronger offers during the period when feedstock availability was tight.
Outlook for the Coming Period
The market outlook after Q2 2026 will depend heavily on feedstock availability, crude oil movements, shipping conditions, and downstream demand. If butadiene supplies continue to improve and transportation routes remain stable, some of the cost pressure seen earlier in the quarter could gradually disappear.
On the other hand, any fresh disruption to petrochemical shipments could quickly bring supply concerns back into the market. Buyers are therefore likely to continue watching feedstock developments closely before making large inventory commitments.
The Polybutadiene Rubber (PBR) price trend during Q2 2026 showed how quickly a combination of geopolitical risks, feedstock shortages, currency movement, freight costs, and downstream demand can change the rubber market. India recorded an increase of more than 55%, while China saw a rise of around 28%, highlighting the strength of the quarterly rally.
At the same time, the June corrections in both markets showed that prices can respond quickly when supply conditions improve. Polybutadiene Rubber (PBR) Prices are therefore likely to remain sensitive to changes in butadiene availability, crude oil costs, shipping conditions, and purchasing activity.
Overall, Q2 2026 was a highly active period for the PBR market. The quarter began with supply concerns and rapidly increasing costs, while the final month brought signs of stabilization. Going forward, a more balanced supply chain could reduce volatility, but the market is likely to remain closely linked to developments in the broader petrochemical and energy sectors.
