Newcastle United of the English professional soccer team barely beat the fourth division team AFC Wimbledon in the third round of the League Cup (Carabao Cup), which had been postponed due to heavy rain, and boarded the last train to the round of 16.
Newcastle won 1-0 against Wimbledon in the postponed 2024-2025 Carabao Cup 3rd round match held at St. James' Park in Newcastle, England on the 2nd (Korean time).
The match was originally supposed to be played at Wimbledon's home ground, the Cherry Red Records Stadium, on the 26th of last month.
However, the stadium was flooded by heavy rain at the time, and the grass in one corner of the ground was badly dug up, exposing bare ground. With the ground damaged to the point where it was difficult to repair immediately, Wimbledon postponed not only the Carabao Cup but also regular league home games.
Eventually, the Carabao Cup match between the two teams was rescheduled for the second day and moved to Newcastle's home ground, St James' Park.
Despite having 80% of the ball against Wimbledon, Newcastle managed just four shots on target and won narrowly thanks to Fabian Schaer's penalty in added time in the first half.
Newcastle will face Chelsea in the last 16 of the competition on the 30th of this month for a place in the quarter-finals.
