How Material Selection Impacts Results at a Chennai Plastic Injection Moulding Company
The pump housing that taught me this lesson passed every test we gave it. Dimensions were spot on, the finish was clean, and the buyer was pleased about the 20% saving on resin. Then the units went into the field. Heat from the motor softened the polypropylene just enough for the housing to sag, and the seals began to weep. Returns started in week six.
Nobody had made a mistake on the shop floor. The material was simply the wrong one, and it had been chosen at a desk, from a price list.
The Quote Is Not the Starting Point
Most buyers send a drawing to a Chennai Plastic Injection Moulding Company and wait for a number. Fair enough, that’s how procurement works. But a quote built on a resin nobody has questioned is only a guess with decimals.
Material sets the rules for everything after it. Polypropylene shrinks about 1.5 to 2 percent as it cools, while ABS shrinks nearer 0.5, so the same part needs a differently cut tool for each. Cooling speed decides your cycle time, and cycle time decides the piece price once volumes climb. Then there’s ageing: heat, damp and sunlight work on a part for years after it leaves your dock.
And the cheap-resin maths almost never holds. If a grade saves you Rs 15 a kilo but scraps 8% of every run, you’ve lost money. Count the cost of each good part.

How I Narrow It Down
Nobody needs to compare forty grades. I ask four things, and the answers usually leave two or three candidates standing.
Where will it live? Chennai’s humidity and sun are tough on plastic. I’ve seen unstabilised polypropylene turn chalky on a rooftop in a single season. If the part sits near a motor, don’t take anyone’s word on heat resistance. Read the heat deflection temperature on the datasheet.
What is it carrying? A clip must flex thousands of times without cracking. A gear must stay stiff and wear slowly. If you can’t describe the job in one sentence, you can’t pick the resin yet.
Who else has a say? Food contact, medical use and UL94 flame ratings cut the list fast. Finding that out at an audit is painful.
What happens after moulding? Tapped holes, tight bores and inserts often need finishing, and many teams prototype or finish through CNC Machining Chennai workshops. Resins behave very differently under a cutter. Acetal and nylon machine cleanly, while some brittle grades chip or smear.
Mistakes I Keep Seeing
Drying is the classic. Nylon can soak up several percent moisture by weight, and if it goes into the hopper straight from the bag, you get splay marks and brittle parts. Around 80°C for a few hours usually sorts it out, but someone has to insist on it.
Then there’s the late resin swap. The mould is cut, the schedule is tight, and somebody suggests a “similar” material. Similar isn’t the same. Shrinkage differs, dimensions drift, and the fix costs more than the delay would have. Colour approval is another one that gets left till last, when a mismatch is most expensive to correct.
What’s Shifting in Plastics
Recycled content is the biggest change. Brands now ask for post-consumer resin, and moulders are learning to cope with its batch-to-batch swings in flow and colour. Glass and carbon-filled grades are replacing metal in automotive and EV parts to save weight, and halogen-free flame-retardant compounds are gaining ground in electronics and charging gear. Mould-flow simulation has also become routine, because catching warpage on a screen is far cheaper than recutting steel.
A Short Checklist Before You Release the PO
-
Send operating conditions with the drawing: temperature, load, indoor or outdoor.
-
Ask for the datasheet, and a batch certificate if the part is critical.
-
Run a small trial lot before committing to volume.
-
Agree regrind limits in writing.
-
Prototype two grades, even if one looks like a sure winner.
Find a Moulder Who Argues With You
The best moulders push back. They’ll ask about temperature, finish and yearly quantity, and they’ll tell you when your material choice looks off. The ones who nod and quote exactly what you sent will let you find the problem yourself, usually after the first batch.
Good shops can be hard to find and harder to compare. That’s the gap Indust fills, linking buyers and procurement teams with manufacturers and suppliers so the comparison happens before the RFQ goes out.
FAQs
Which plastic works for most general-purpose parts?
Polypropylene and ABS cover the majority. PP wins on cost and chemical resistance, ABS on finish and toughness.
Does material choice affect lead time?
Yes. Grades that need drying, narrow processing windows or harder tool steel all add days.
Can I change resin after the mould is built?
Sometimes, but different shrinkage can push parts out of tolerance. Ask the moulder first.
Moulding or machining for a small batch?
Under a few hundred pieces, machining often wins since there’s no tooling cost. CNC Machining Chennai shops turn prototypes around quickly, and moulding takes over once volume justifies a tool.
Before the Next RFQ
Write down where the part lives, what it carries and what it has to pass. Send that to two or three shops and see who comes back with the sharpest questions. That’s your shortlist for any Chennai Plastic Injection Moulding Company worth a trial order. And if you’d rather not build that list from scratch, Indust can get you there in days instead of weeks.
