What Is the Difference Between Lycra and Spandex?
Stretchy, bouncy, and fun! You know how clothes can either be too tight or stretchy and reparative? Most of those are created from a prime fabric material like Lycra or Spandex. So, what makes Lycra the same as Spandex? Let’s find out together!
What Are Lycra and Spandex?
Lycra and Spandex are two kinds of extremely stretchy material, the use in clothing is prevalent too. They can expand to 5 or even 6 times the size that they are if dehydrated! They are available in various kinds of apparel, especially in things like tights, swimsuits and sports bras. Your clothes fit more snugly on your body with these fabrics and allow you to bend whenever required. Also helps a lot when you are playing sports or exercising!
Properties Of Lycra And Spandex
Lycra is a brand name, and it originates from the company DuPont. It is a special kind of spandex that stretches really well - it has great recovery, so when you stretch the fabric and let go, it goes back to its original shape. Elasticity is the properties of materials into a flexible object. This is why Lycra in clothing is such a great material for body-conscious clothing, like exercise clothes and tight-fitting apparel.
In contrast, the word Spandex refers to any elastic material that behaves like Lycra. One of the reasons some people prefer Spandex is that it generally costs less than Lycra. That said, it may not provide as much recovery or a second-skin stretch-factor (translation: things like lycra tend to be what makes pants pooch in the knees whereas Spandex does so less). This means the cuts and fits of clothing made from Spandex may not sit as close or last so long with Lycra.
Choosing the Right Material
If you are buying garments which were manufactured from Lycra or Spandex they can be specially selected based upon your requirements. If you want clothes which will mould to your body and hold their shape over time (yoga pants or leggings ), then usually Lycra is the better option. Lycra clothing is generally more durable, which also means it has a longer life than Spandex clothes. This Lycra and Spandex is great especially if the shoes are worn very often!
Comfy, Manning Up, and Giving a Stretch
For comfort, Lycra is typically more comfortable than Spandex. They do feel softer, and less plasticky against the skin (hands up who else hates wearing these things for long periods) Another attribute of Lycra is that it has a better longevity to Spandex. This fabric is the primary reason why garments made of Lycra last longer and maintain their shape even after repetitive washing.
Lycra is really good when it comes to the stretch. Stretch it up to 6 times its size and then watch the compound return right back. Spandex, on the other hand can only stretch up to 4 times its original size. Spandex is apt to lose its shape after stretching, and it should be kept in mind when pulling the soul clothes.
Pros and Cons of Lycra & Spandex
So lets dive in and see the good vs. bad of both! Lycra is amazing stuff. It stretches really well, is long-lasting and wear comfortable. But, Lyrca is actually more expensive than Spandex and price could be an issue for some users.
On the other hand, Spandex also has its benefits. It is more cost effective when compared to lycra, especially for your budget. That said, Spandex has not ability stretch similarly to Lycra. Spandex may not hug your body as effectively compared to clothes made from Lycra. Also, they might lose their shape especially if you wash them a whole lot which is annoying.
To summarize, Lycra and Spandex are elastic materials used in sportswear. You see, spandex lycra yarn is like the genus for all types of stretchy shit and Lycra is just one type under that species with better WAR... errrrr, elasticity and recovery. When you are making a decision between them, consider what your clothes have to do and which features actually matter the most. Well, I hope this is sort of helpful in deciding when it comes to choosing your apparel because now you know which onomatopoeia sounds better... Lycra vs. Spandex.
