Local SEO for Lawyers: How to Audit Your Google Business Profile in 2027

72

Local SEO for lawyers now starts with a Google Business Profile that is accurate, follows Google’s rules for attorneys, is fully completed, and stays active every month. Google’s AI pulls from your profile, your reviews, and your website when it answers a question about your firm. A stale or non-compliant listing can lead it to describe you wrongly to someone who is about to pick a lawyer.

That changes what an audit should look for. Some long-standing advice, such as seeding your own Q&A or adding every practice area as a category, is now outdated or against Google’s guidelines. The goal also isn’t more views. It’s more calls and consultation requests from people whose matters your firm actually takes.

This guide covers auditing a profile you already have. If you’re starting from zero, read SocioSquares’ guide to setting up a law firm Google Business Profile first.

Key Takeaways

  • Google shut down the Business Profile Q&A API on November 3, 2025, so seeding your own questions no longer works.

  • Ask Maps launched on March 12, 2026, and Maps now draws on data from more than 300 million places and reviews from over 500 million contributors.

  • Google sets 2 conditions for an attorney to have a personal profile: a public-facing role, and being reachable at the verified location during stated hours.

  • In its first 30 days with SocioSquares, Evergreen Valley Law Group went from 0 to 6 keywords in Google Maps’ top 3.

  • Adams Law Office saw direction requests rise 57.1% year over year.

Why Your Profile Matters More for Local SEO for Lawyers

Three changes explain the shift.

Q&A is no longer a tactic. Google’s developer change log confirms the Q&A API was discontinued on November 3, 2025, and says the feature is being reworked. Playbooks built on posting your own questions and answers belong to the old version.

Ask Maps answers in conversation. Google introduced it on March 12, 2026, as a Gemini-powered feature that responds to complex questions with a custom map. It began rolling out in the U.S. and India on Android and iOS.

Google’s AI grounds answers in your profile and site. In its August 2026 Small Business Bulletin, Google explained that AI responses draw on web pages and business profiles, and cite them. It also says the AI looks for specific, detailed information to decide whether a business is a match. If your website says one thing and your profile says another, Google gets conflicting answers about your firm.

Google’s Rules for Law Firms and Attorneys

Google’s guidelines name lawyers as individual practitioners and set specific rules.

  • Solo attorney at a branded firm. If one public-facing attorney represents the firm at a location, Google prefers that they share the firm’s profile. The attorney’s name goes after the brand in the format “[brand]: [practitioner name].”

  • A personal attorney profile. It’s allowed only if the attorney has a public-facing role and can be reached directly at the verified location during stated hours. Support staff shouldn’t have profiles. Where several attorneys share an office, the firm keeps its own profile, and each attorney’s profile title uses only their name. One attorney shouldn’t have multiple profiles for different specialties.

  • Virtual offices. A rented mailing address where you don’t actually operate isn’t eligible.

  • Co-working spaces. They qualify only with clear signage, client visits during business hours, and staff from your own firm on site during those hours.

If a satellite office fails these tests, the fix is to remove it, not optimize it.

The Audit: What to Check, Field by Field

Compare each item with Google’s guidelines and with your website.

  1. Name. Use the real name on your signage and letterhead. Fix: strip out practice areas, cities, and taglines. Google warns that extra information in a name can get a profile suspended.

  2. Address and offices. Every listed office should be real and staffed. Fix: remove virtual offices and failing co-working listings, and merge duplicates.

  3. Categories. Google wants as few as possible, each one completing the sentence “This business is a…” Fix: choose the most specific accurate primary category and delete any that are really keywords. Our article on what gets a law firm into Google’s local pack explains how categories, proximity, and reviews work together.

  4. Phone and website. Use a local number you control. Fix: link each office to its own location or practice-area page, and tag the link so analytics can separate profile traffic.

  5. Hours. Show real client-facing hours and set special hours for holidays.

  6. Description. No links, and no promotions or prices. Fix: describe your practice areas, clients, and firm history in plain language that matches your site.

  7. Attributes, photos, and attorney details. Fill in every attribute that applies, add current office and attorney photos, and make sure names and credentials are correct.

  8. Activity. Check when you last posted, added photos, or replied to a review. A profile that went quiet in 2025 needs a routine, not a one-time burst.

Reviews and Replies: The Confidentiality Check

Google’s prohibited content policy bans incentives like payment or discounts for reviews. It also bans asking only happy clients and telling people what a review should say. Ask every client the same simple question, and never write or buy a review.

Replies carry a separate risk for attorneys. ABA Formal Opinion 496 concludes that a negative review alone doesn’t allow a lawyer to reveal information about the representation. State rules vary, so check your bar’s guidance. Keep replies free of client matters, outcomes, and anything confirming that someone was a client.

Who Should Run the Profile

The work splits into a one-time cleanup and a monthly routine, and it starts with ownership.

Keep ownership with the firm. A profile can have several owners but only one primary owner. Managers can edit information, answer reviews, and manage posts, but can’t add or remove users or delete the profile. Hold primary ownership in a firm account and give outside help manager access.

The firm supplies the raw material. Photos, attorney credentials, real hours, and practice areas have to come from you. A specialist can organize and publish them but can’t invent them.

Cleanup first, then upkeep. Fix names, offices, categories, links, and duplicates once. After that, post regularly, add photos, answer reviews promptly and compliantly, and update the profile whenever hours, staff, or services change.

How to Tell Whether Your Profile Brings Real Clients

Judge the profile by consultations, not views. Google’s performance report shows calls, direction requests, and website clicks, though the numbers include activity from Google Ads. Then tie them to intake by recording the source of every new inquiry and keeping it attached through the consultation. Our guide to law firm website conversions covers call tracking and lead-source fields.

Early signals can look like this. From September 11 to October 12, 2026, Evergreen Valley Law Group, a San Jose patent and IP firm, had its attributes updated and 9 posts published. The firm went from no keywords in Maps’ top 3 to 6, and from 9 to 16 in the top 10.

For Adams Law Office, a Berkeley trademark firm, SocioSquares’ work produced these results:

  • Business interactions up 36.2% year over year

  • Direction requests up 57.1% year over year

  • Phone calls from local map results up 45.45% from February to August 2025

The Adams Law Office case study shows profile work sat inside a wider SEO program. These are ranking and activity figures, not signed matters. Your intake data shows whether the activity became the right clients.

When to Bring in a Specialist

Handle it in-house if you have one office, someone who posts and replies every month, and intake that already records lead sources. Get help when:

  • You have multiple offices, or attorneys asking for their own profiles.

  • Your profile is suspended, duplicated, or keeps having edits rejected.

  • Nobody owns the monthly routine and the profile has gone quiet.

  • You can’t connect profile calls to consultations.

  • You want review replies checked against confidentiality rules before posting.

SocioSquares is a law firm marketing agency founded in 2011, a Google Partner, and operates under ISO 27001 and HIPAA-compliant security standards. Its local SEO services for law firms cover profile optimization, local listings, review management, and tracking of rankings, traffic, and calls.

Myths That Keep Law Firm Profiles Stuck

  • “More categories mean more searches.” Google asks for as few as possible, and extras that don’t describe your firm don’t help.

  • “A cheap virtual office gets us into a new city.” Google says virtual offices aren’t eligible.

  • “More views means it’s working.” Views don’t show who called. Intake data does.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we still add questions and answers to our profile?
Not through the API, which Google discontinued on November 3, 2025. Put common client questions on your website and keep your profile details complete.

Can each attorney have their own profile?
Only some can. Google requires a public-facing role and direct contact at the verified location during stated hours, and the title should include only the attorney’s name.

Can we list a co-working office?
Only if it has clear signage, receives clients during business hours, and is staffed by your own people during those hours.

Should an agency own our profile?
No. Keep primary ownership in a firm account and give outside help manager access.

Can an audit guarantee top rankings?
No. Google says you can’t pay for a better local ranking, and distance from the searcher is out of your hands. An audit removes the problems and gaps holding a profile back.
