Chandigarh to Bir Billing Travel Guide 2026: Routes, Buses, Distance and Road Trip Tips

0
5

Chandigarh to Bir Billing covers roughly 230 to 290 km, depending on your route and exact endpoints. Plan for about 6 to 8 hours on the road.

You can take a private overnight bus, take a government bus to Baijnath and switch, drive yourself, or hire a taxi.

Billing sits about 14 km uphill from Bir village. They are two different places, and your bus will not drop you at the Billing takeoff point.

Here is the mistake most first timers make. They book a ticket that says “Bir” and assume it ends at their hostel. It may not.

Booking sites list several different Bir drop points, and some of them sit far from where you plan to stay. This guide shows you how to work out exactly where you will get off before you pay.

We plan Himachal trips at Travel Coffee, a travel company based in Shimla. Arrival confusion is the problem we see most on this route, so we built this guide around it.

How Far Is Chandigarh From Bir Billing?

Chandigarh to Bir Village Distance

The answer depends on which road you take. There are two main corridors, and they differ by a fair number of kilometres.

The shorter route runs through Mandi and Joginder Nagar. Route estimates for this approach sit between 229 and 250 km.

Treat that as a route estimate, not a fixed Google Maps number. Your exact starting point in Chandigarh and your stay in Bir both change the total.

The longer route runs through Una, Kangra and Palampur. Estimates for it sit around 275 to 285 km.

Bus booking platforms also show figures in the 269 to 285 km range. Those numbers reflect the path the operator drives, so they will not match a car route exactly.

Bir Village to Billing Takeoff Point

Himachal Tourism puts the Bir to Billing distance at about 14 km, and the road climbs the whole way.

Billing is the paragliding takeoff site. Bir is the landing side settlement where cafés, homestays, monasteries and the Tibetan Colony sit.

You almost certainly want to reach Bir first. Your hotel, hostel or homestay sits somewhere in or around Bir, so that address is your real destination.

Billing is a trip you make later, usually on the day you fly.

Which Is the Best Road Route From Chandigarh to Bir?

Route 1: Via Kiratpur, Mandi and Joginder Nagar

This route goes Chandigarh, Ropar, Kiratpur, Bilaspur or Ner Chowk, Mandi, Joginder Nagar and then Bir.

The big plus is the improved four lane highway that carries you a long way towards Mandi. Those stretches move well and feel easy on a car or bus.

The catch comes later. After Mandi, the road to Joginder Nagar and Bir turns narrower and starts winding through the hills.

Expect slower speeds, sharp bends and heavy vehicles on that last part. If anyone in your group gets motion sickness, this is where it hits.

Himachal Tourism puts Bir about 16 km from Joginder Nagar, so once you reach Joginder Nagar, you are close.

Our team suggests a chai break in Mandi town before the hill section starts. Hot chai and a light snack here make the winding stretch easier on your stomach.

Route 2: Via Una, Kangra and Palampur

This route goes Chandigarh, Ropar, Una, Kangra, Palampur, Baijnath and then Bir.

It covers more distance, but it takes you through the Kangra Valley. You can see tea gardens around Palampur and stop at the old temple town of Baijnath.

Bir sits about 30 km from Palampur, according to Himachal Tourism. So if you want a night in Palampur first, this route makes a lot of sense.

Which Route Should You Choose?

Pick your route on the day, not weeks earlier. Check current road conditions, weather and any closures the night before you leave.

Choose Mandi if you want the shorter drive and only care about reaching Bir. Choose Kangra if you want Palampur, Baijnath or the tea gardens on the way.

Here is one honest piece of advice. If you only have a weekend and Bir is the whole point, skip the Kangra detour.

It usually adds distance (about 275 to 285 km versus 229 to 250 km), and that eats into your time in Bir. Save Palampur for a longer trip.

Neither road wins in every season. Rain, landslides and repair work can change which one moves better on a given day.

Is There a Direct Bus From Chandigarh to Bir Billing?

Private Volvo and Overnight Bus Options

Yes, private operators sell Chandigarh to Bir tickets on booking platforms like redBus. What you see depends on your travel date.

Operators such as Laxmi Holidays and Bharmani Travels have appeared in these listings. Example departures showed 23:55 and 23:59, with journey times of about 7 to 8 hours.

Read those as examples, not a timetable. Operators change times, drop services and add new ones, so check the listing for your exact date.

Most private options run overnight. You sleep on the bus and arrive in the morning, which saves a hotel night and a full day.

HRTC and Government Buses

HRTC runs an official booking portal at online.hrtchp.com. You can search routes there directly.

Search for Baijnath, Joginder Nagar and other interchange points, not just “Bir”. A direct government bus to Bir may or may not appear for your date.

A third party timetable lists ordinary Chandigarh to Baijnath services, including a 07:45 departure. Confirm it with HRTC before you plan around it.

If you take a government bus, plan for onward travel from Baijnath or wherever the bus actually stops. That second leg is short, but you need to sort it out.

Where to Board in Chandigarh

ISBT Sector 43 shows up as a common boarding point for buses heading to Bir.

Do not assume every private bus leaves from inside the terminal. Some operators pick up at roadside points nearby or elsewhere in the city.

Your ticket shows a specific boarding address and time. Follow that, not what a friend told you or what a blog said last year.

Call the operator a few hours before departure. Ask where exactly the bus waits and what it looks like.

Where Do Chandigarh to Bir Buses Actually Stop?

This is the part most guides skip, and it causes the most trouble.

On redBus, the Bir drop list includes Bir Road, Bir Chowk, Bir Volvo Parking, Tibetan Colony, Landing Site and other variations. Each operator uses its own stop names.

Two tickets that both say “Bir” can end at two very different places. Here is how to read each label.

Bir Road and Bir Road Chowk

Bir Road and Bir Road Chowk usually point to a stop near the highway connection, not the village centre.

If your bus drops you here, you are not at your hotel yet. You still need a ride into Bir village or wherever you are staying.

We cannot give you a reliable walking distance from this point to the village, because it depends on the exact stop your operator uses.

Before you book, open the drop point details on the booking page. If the platform shows a map, look at where the pin sits compared with your hotel.

If it shows only a name, call the operator and ask one direct question: “Does this bus enter Bir village, or does it stop at the highway turnoff?”

Bir Volvo Parking and Chaugan Side Stops

Bir Volvo Parking and stops with Chaugan in the name also appear in drop directories.

These names sound specific, but similar labels do not always mean the same physical spot. Two operators can use slightly different names for nearby points, or the same name for different points.

Ask the operator for the exact map pin. Save it on your phone and send it to your hotel.

Then ask your hotel whether they can arrange a pickup at that pin. Give them your expected arrival time and the bus operator’s name.

Here is an insider tip most guides miss. Ask the hotel to send you the driver’s name and number the evening before, not on arrival morning.

Tibetan Colony and Landing Site Drop Offs

Tibetan Colony and Landing Site also show up as drop labels. These are well known landmarks in Bir.

A bus that lists them gets you closer to the main area. It still does not mean door to door service to your hostel.

Compare the drop label with your hotel’s actual address. If your stay sits near the Tibetan Colony, a Tibetan Colony drop may work well.

If your stay sits on another side of Bir, you still need a short ride. Ask your host which drop point works best for their location before you book the bus.

Note that Landing Site is where paragliders come down. It is not the Billing takeoff point, which sits 14 km uphill.

Why a Ticket Saying “Bir” Is Not Enough

Picture this. You book an overnight bus from Chandigarh to Bir. The ticket says “Bir”, so you assume it ends near your hostel.

At dawn, the conductor calls your stop. You step off at a junction you do not recognise, with your backpack, low phone battery and no idea how far the hostel is.

This is an illustration, not a real customer story. But it shows how easily the label misleads you.

You avoid it with three steps. First, open the ticket details and read the exact drop point name and address.

Second, call the operator and confirm whether the bus enters Bir village or stops at the turnoff. Third, send that drop point to your hotel and agree on a pickup or a clear plan.

What we tell our travellers is simple. Choose your bus by its drop point first and its price second.

A slightly cheaper bus that leaves you at the wrong spot at dawn costs you more in stress and taxi money than it saves.

How Do You Reach Your Hotel After Getting Off the Bus?

From Bir Road Chowk to Bir Village

From Bir Road Chowk, you can take a local taxi or a pickup your hotel arranges in advance.

We cannot give you a fixed fare for this stretch. Ask your hotel what a fair price looks like before you travel.

Early mornings make this harder. Taxis may not wait at the stop when the bus arrives, so do not count on finding one.

A safety warning: if anyone at the stop quotes you a fare, agree on the full amount before you put your bag in the car.

Booking listings show Landing Site as a drop label, not the Billing takeoff point. If someone tells you your bus “goes up to Billing”, check your ticket instead of trusting the claim.

Keep your hotel’s number and your bus operator’s number saved before you leave Chandigarh. You can also message our team on +91-7018537498 if you get stuck.

From Baijnath to Bir

If you take a bus to Baijnath, Bir sits about 15 to 16 km away, according to one local guide.

You can take a local bus or a taxi for this short hop. We do not have a verified fare or frequency for either.

Ask at the Baijnath bus stand which bus heads to Bir, or ask your hotel to send a car. If you arrive late in the day, fix the taxi in advance.

Here is a money saving tip. If you travel in a group of three or four, one pre arranged taxi from Baijnath often makes more sense than separate bus tickets plus a walk with luggage. Compare both quotes before you decide.

Arriving Before Sunrise

The example overnight departures around 23:55 with 7 to 8 hour journeys put you in Bir around 7 to 8 AM, if the bus keeps time.

That is a timing tip that changes the whole first day. Most hotels set check in for later, so ask about early check in or a place to leave bags before you book.

Ask your bus operator three things. What is the exact final stop? What is the driver’s or conductor’s number? Will the bus call out each Bir stop by name?

Save the drop pin offline, in case your phone signal drops on the hills. Charge your phone fully before you board.

Chandigarh to Bir Billing by Car: Is Self Driving Worth It?

A car gives you the most freedom. You stop when you want, carry more luggage and drive straight to your hotel’s door.

You also skip the drop point puzzle completely. For families or groups with bags, that alone makes driving attractive.

Choose the Mandi route if you want the shorter drive. Choose the Kangra route if you want to see Palampur or Baijnath on the way.

Leave Chandigarh early so you reach the hill roads in daylight. The narrow, winding section after Mandi feels much harder after dark.

Take proper meal breaks. A tired driver on hill bends is the real risk on this road, not the distance.

Drive slowly on bends, honk on blind turns and give way to buses and trucks. Local drivers know these roads and move faster than you should.

We cannot give you a toll or fuel total here. It depends on your vehicle, route and current prices.

Remember that Billing takeoff point needs a separate uphill drive of about 14 km. Many travellers leave their car in Bir and use paragliding operator transport instead.

If you would rather not drive at all, look at our Himachal tour packages, which include transport and stays.

How Much Does a Chandigarh to Bir Billing Trip Cost?

Private Bus Fares

A redBus route page showed advertised fares from ₹380. Some private overnight Volvo services showed fares around ₹999 onward.

These are dated platform examples, not guaranteed prices. Fares change with the date, the day of the week, the bus type and how many seats remain.

Check fares for a few nearby dates if your plans allow. Weekend and holiday fares can run higher.

Government Bus and Local Transfer Costs

Your real cost is two numbers added together: the bus fare and the last mile fare.

Check your bus fare on the HRTC portal or the booking platform. Then ask your hotel what a taxi or local bus from your drop point costs.

A cheap bus with an expensive taxi at the end may cost more than a slightly pricier bus that drops you closer. Do the full sum.

Car, Taxi, Fuel and Tolls

For a self drive, add up fuel, tolls, parking and food. We do not have verified totals for these.

For a taxi from Chandigarh, ask for a written quote that says whether tolls, parking, driver allowance and return trip charges sit inside the price.

Budget separately for paragliding. The 2026 fee, insurance charge and any permit or vehicle entry charge need checking with the operator.

Can You Reach Bir Billing From Chandigarh by Train or Flight?

No direct broad gauge train runs to Bir. You would need to change trains, and that adds time and effort.

Pathankot works as a possible interchange. From the Kangra side, Ahju is a nearby narrow gauge rail stop.

Check train availability and service status with Indian Railways before you plan around it.

Gaggal (Kangra) Airport sits roughly 65 to 70 km from Bir. Check current flights with the airlines directly.

From Chandigarh, road travel usually means fewer changes. One bus or one car ride beats a train, a transfer and a taxi.

What Are the Best Stops on a Chandigarh to Bir Road Trip?

On the Mandi route, Mandi town makes a good break point before the hills tighten. Joginder Nagar comes next and puts you close to Bir.

On the Kangra route, you pass Kangra, then Palampur for its tea gardens, then Baijnath for its old temple.

These stops do not all sit on one road. Pick the route first, then pick stops on that route.

If you want to stretch the trip, Dharamshala and McLeodganj sit on the Kangra side of the map. Our guide to places to visit in Dharamshala and McLeodganj helps you decide what is worth your time.

Many travellers pair Bir with a few days there. If you want stays and transport handled, look at our Dharamshala tour packages.

Is a Two Night Bir Billing Trip From Chandigarh Enough?

Two nights works for a relaxed weekend. You get one full day in Bir, which covers paragliding and a slow look around.

Day 1: Travel From Chandigarh to Bir

Either leave Chandigarh early in the morning by car, or take a pre booked overnight bus the night before.

Reach Bir, check in and rest. Keep the afternoon light with a walk, a café and early dinner.

Do not plan paragliding on arrival day. You will be tired, and you need time to talk to operators.

Day 2: Paragliding and Exploring Bir

If the weather allows, fly in the morning. You go up to Billing, the takeoff site, and land near Bir.

Weather decides whether you fly, not your itinerary. Keep a backup plan in case the operator cancels.

Spend the rest of the day around the monasteries, cafés and the Tibetan Colony area. The pace here is slow, and that is the point.

Day 3: Return to Chandigarh

Have breakfast, check out and leave with plenty of buffer. Traffic near Kiratpur and Chandigarh can slow you down late in the day.

If you take a bus back, check return times on the booking platform for your date. Do not assume the outbound timing works in reverse.

How Do You Travel From Bir Village to Billing?

Billing sits about 14 km uphill from Bir. The road climbs with steep and winding sections.

Most paragliding operators arrange transport to the takeoff point. Ask whether your booking includes it before you pay.

You can also take a local vehicle up. Agree on the fare and the return plan before you leave.

Check road conditions before driving up yourself, especially after rain.

Your Chandigarh to Bir bus does not continue to the takeoff point. Plan this leg separately.

When Is the Best Time to Travel From Chandigarh to Bir?

Spring and autumn draw the most travellers, because the weather suits outdoor plans.

October gets wide recommendations for paragliding at Bir Billing. Flying still depends on the weather and operator permissions on the day.

The monsoon brings real risk. Heavy rain triggers landslides and road closures across Himachal.

On 12 August 2026, reports showed a suspension on the Mandi to Joginder Nagar stretch of NH-154 after heavy rain. That was a past event, not a current closure.

If you love adventure trips, compare Bir with our guide to adventure activities in Manali. Some travellers combine both.

What Should You Check Before Leaving Chandigarh?

Check road conditions on both routes the night before. Rain or repair work can change which road makes sense.

Recheck your bus booking, the boarding point and the drop point. Make sure you have the exact map pin for both.

Confirm your hotel’s check in rules and whether they allow early arrival. Confirm who picks you up, at what spot, and at what time.

Check the weather for Bir and the hill section. Carry some cash for small payments and last mile rides.

Plan for delays. A short distance in Himachal can still take hours, so never schedule something tight on arrival.

Should You Book a Custom Bir Billing Trip?

Travel Coffee is a Shimla based company that plans customised Himachal trips. We do not run HRTC or private buses.

What we do is connect the pieces. We help you match transport, stay and a realistic itinerary so your drop point and your hotel actually work together.

In our experience, a weekend trip goes wrong in the gaps between bookings. Coordinating them in one place removes most of that risk.
