How Can a Digital Bench Power Supply Improve Testing?

The Digital Bench Power Supply from EA Elektro-Automatik gives engineers an adjustable DC source for development, servicing and laboratory work. Model EA-PS 2042-06B combines a single output with voltage adjustment up to 42 V, current adjustment up to 6 A and a maximum output power of 100 W.

Its practical value starts with control. Before powering a circuit, you can define the intended supply conditions, observe its response and change one setting at a time. That makes a test easier to interpret and repeat when a design moves from its first prototype to a more complete assembly.

What Should You Look for in a Bench Supply?

Begin with the circuit's requirements: operating voltage, expected current and maximum power demand. Then consider how many independent supply rails the project needs.

The EA-PS 2042-06B provides one adjustable output. A project requiring several independently controlled voltages may need a different arrangement.

When comparing Bench Power Supplies, assess the complete operating range alongside control options and measurement requirements. EA lists USB remote control for this model, providing another option for compatible computer-based test setups.

For sensitive circuits, also examine the published ripple, regulation and accuracy specifications at the intended operating point. A large voltage range alone does not establish suitability for every measurement.

Can It Deliver 42 V and 6 A Together?

The 100 W rating sets the combined voltage and current limit. Delivering 42 V at 6 A would require 252 W, which exceeds this model's capacity.

EA's operating manual explains that the voltage and current settings limit each other to keep the requested combination within the available power.

Using power = voltage × current, these examples show the difference:

Example voltage Example load current Calculated power Within the stated limits?
5 V 2 A 10 W Yes
12 V 6 A 72 W Yes
24 V 4 A 96 W Yes
42 V 2 A 84 W Yes
42 V 6 A 252 W No

These are selection examples, not measured results. Allow for the circuit's actual demand, including start-up behaviour, when planning a test.

How Does Current Limiting Help During Development?

In constant-voltage operation, a supply maintains the selected voltage while the connected circuit draws current. When demand reaches the current limit, the supply enters constant-current operation and the voltage can fall.

This transition is useful information. It shows that the circuit is asking for more current than the configured limit permits. Keysight's testing guidance describes this crossover as a key part of evaluating supply behaviour.

An unexpectedly low voltage therefore deserves investigation. Review the current setting, expected start-up demand and circuit condition before increasing the limit.

Choose the limit from the design's requirements. Current limiting is a useful control, but it cannot guarantee that every sensitive component will survive an incorrect connection.

What Makes the First Power-Up More Informative?

Write down the expected result before energising the board. A brief test note could identify:

  • The intended input voltage and polarity
  • The expected idle and active current
  • The chosen current limit
  • The circuit revision being tested
  • The conditions that require the test to stop

Make connections with the output de-energised, confirm polarity and use the protection settings described in the applicable manual.

Once powered, compare the observed behaviour with the test note. Record a failed start as carefully as a successful one. The settings and symptoms can help distinguish a circuit fault from an unsuitable test arrangement.

Why Do the Output Leads Matter?

The supply and circuit form a complete electrical path through the leads and connectors. Cable resistance creates voltage drop, so the voltage reaching the board can differ from the voltage at the supply terminals.

EA's installation guidance recommends suitable conductor sizing and short connections to reduce losses and heating.

When selecting 4 mm Test Probe Leads, check plug compatibility, insulation, current rating and the connection at the circuit end. A matching plug diameter does not establish that a lead can carry the full 6 A.

Use secure connections and arrange the cables so moving a notebook or instrument will not disturb the circuit.

When Should You Examine the Waveform?

A numerical display is useful for monitoring operating conditions, while waveform measurements reveal behaviour over time.

Suitable Oscilloscopes can help investigate ripple, brief voltage dips and switching disturbances. These measurements are particularly useful when a board resets intermittently or behaves differently as its load changes.

Probe selection and connection technique influence the result. Tektronix explains that long probe ground leads can introduce ringing and pick up noise, potentially obscuring the signal being investigated. Confirm grounding arrangements and use a suitable differential probe where required.

How Can Load Testing Make Results More Repeatable?

A controlled load helps establish how a source responds as current demand changes.

Compatible Electronic Loads allow technicians to vary demand systematically and record the resulting voltage and current. This approach can help characterise regulation and the transition into current limiting.

Set the test range within the ratings of the supply, load and connecting leads. Save the operating points with the results so another technician can repeat the same assessment.

Before choosing the Digital Bench Power Supply, map your required voltage and current combinations against its 100 W ceiling. Confirm that one output meets the project requirements, then prepare the connections and measurements around the questions your circuit testing needs to answer.
