How to Prepare Your Skin for Michigan's Changing Seasons

If you live in Michigan, you already know that the weather does not ease into change. One week it is warm enough for a light jacket, and the next the heat is on indoors and the wind is cutting. Your skin feels every shift, and a routine that worked in August often stops working by November.

Here is a practical way to adjust, without buying a cabinet full of new products.

Why skin changes when the weather does

Cooler air holds less moisture, and indoor heating dries it out further. Many people notice tightness, flaking, or a dull look as a result. Summer sun can also leave behind uneven tone that becomes more visible once a tan fades.

None of this means something is wrong with your skin. It means your routine needs a seasonal tune-up.

Step 1: Switch to a gentler cleanser

If your skin feels tight right after washing, your cleanser may be too harsh for the season. Choose a mild, fragrance-free option and wash with lukewarm rather than hot water. Hot water feels good on a cold day, but it can strip natural oils.

Step 2: Moisturize while skin is still slightly damp

Applying moisturizer shortly after cleansing helps lock in hydration. If your current moisturizer feels light for the season, ask a skincare professional about a richer option rather than guessing. Do not forget your hands and lips, which tend to show dryness first.

Step 3: Keep wearing sunscreen

This is the step people drop first and regret later. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends daily broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Snow can reflect UV light, so winter days are not a free pass.

Step 4: Be careful with exfoliation

Exfoliation can help with dullness, but too much of it in dry weather can leave skin irritated. If you use acids or retinoids at home, introduce changes slowly and avoid adding several new actives at once. If you are unsure, a professional consultation can save you from trial and error.

Step 5: Consider a professional reset

A facial can deep-clean and rehydrate skin as the season changes. Some people also choose chemical peels or microneedling in the cooler months, partly because lower sun exposure makes it easier to follow the sun-protection rules that come with them. These treatments are not right for everyone, so it is best to start with a conversation about your skin and your goals.

Signs you should see a dermatologist

A salon can support healthy skin, but it is not a substitute for medical care. See a dermatologist if you have persistent redness, painful or scarring breakouts, rashes that do not clear up, or changes in a mole.

Keep it simple

The best seasonal routine is the one you will actually follow. Gentle cleanser, good moisturizer, daily sunscreen, and professional help when you need it will cover most people.
