The Quran, which was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) for over 23 years, was not arranged in chronological order. Rather, its present order adheres to divine guidance and thematic continuity. Knowledge of the chronological order of revelation offers important insights into the historical and spiritual context of early Islam. The first revealed ayahs are in Surah Al-Alaq (96:1–5), highlighting the value of knowledge and reading. The early revelations, which were revealed primarily in Makkah, deal with faith, monotheism, and the hereafter. These are referred to as Makki Surahs. The later revelations, when the Prophet was in Madinah, referred to as Madani Surahs, deal with social laws, community formation, and governance. Being aware of the sequence enables readers to understand how the Quran reacted to actual events and the changing needs of Muslims. Scholars have prepared lists of the chronological order to facilitate further study.
