The Advantages of Dry Lubricants in Automotive Applications

Dry lubricants are more useful, less messy, and easier to use than old-fashioned lubricants that are based on oil. They are generally applied with aerosol cannons and are made up of both liquids (like water or alcohol) and dry particles that keep things moving smoothly. The liquid quickly disappears when it's used, leaving behind a thin layer of dry lubricant. Industrial lubricants work great on hinges and threaded rods because they are small. If oils were used on these parts, they could get blocked with dirt.
