Wine Fining Agent Market Gains Momentum with Rising Demand for Premium Wine Products

The global wine fining agent market is projected to cross US$1 billion by 2031, expanding at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5% from 2022 to 2031. The market was valued at US$636.6 million in 2021, according to Transparency Market Research. Increasing wine consumption, demand for premium products, and growing interest in plant-based processing ingredients are supporting market development.

Wine fining agents are used during winemaking to clarify and stabilize wine by removing unwanted particles, compounds, and substances that can affect its appearance, flavor, and aroma. Common agents include bentonite, animal-sourced proteins, carbon, potato protein isolate, and polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (PVPP). Their use helps winemakers achieve consistent product quality and meet consumer expectations.

Bentonite and PVPP Support Market Demand

Bentonite accounted for nearly 45% of the market's volume share in 2021, with consumption of approximately 16,876.2 metric tons. Animal-sourced fining agents represented around 30% of the market. Overall volume-based demand across agent types is projected to grow at a CAGR of 3.7% during the forecast period.

PVPP is emerging as a significant growth segment, with the highest value-based CAGR of 6.4% among the agent types highlighted in the report. Its use in wine fining is expected to reach approximately US$159.86 million by 2031. Demand for effective clarification and stabilization solutions is encouraging manufacturers to develop specialized products for different wine varieties and production requirements.

Rising Demand for Plant-Based and Allergen-Free Solutions

The growing popularity of vegan products is creating opportunities for plant-based wine fining agents. Conventional fining processes often use animal-derived proteins such as gelatin, egg white, casein, skim milk, and isinglass. However, concerns about allergens and changing consumer preferences are encouraging winemakers to explore alternatives.

Potato protein isolate and other plant-derived ingredients offer opportunities to address demand for vegan-friendly processing solutions. The wider clean-label movement is also encouraging manufacturers to develop products that meet expectations for allergen-free, GMO-free, and naturally sourced ingredients.

Premium Wine Consumption Strengthens Market Outlook

Red wine represented more than 60% of the global market value in 2021. The use of fining agents in red wine was valued at US$400.3 million and is projected to reach US$669.7 million by 2031.

Increasing consumer interest in premium wines, combined with improving disposable incomes and changing lifestyles, is supporting demand for advanced winemaking ingredients. Growth in urban populations and the expansion of hospitality, restaurants, lounges, and wine retail channels are also contributing to market opportunities.

Regional Markets Present Growth Opportunities

Latin America is expected to record the highest volume CAGR of 4.8% during the forecast period. Chile held the region's largest market share, valued at US$26.7 million in 2021, followed by Brazil at US$16.9 million and Mexico at US$11.8 million. Growing demand for premium wines and the region's expanding consumer base are supporting market development.

Oceania is another promising market, with an expected CAGR of 5.8%. The region accounts for nearly 12% of global wine fining agent consumption, supported by its established wine production industry. South Asia is also expected to expand, with its market value projected to increase from US$34.8 million in 2021 to US$57 million by 2031.

Product Innovation and Strategic Investments Shape Competition

Companies are focusing on research and development, product innovation, and technical services to strengthen their market positions. In January 2019, Dal Cin SpA expanded its product portfolio with the addition of micro bentonite. In May 2021, AEB Group SpA announced an investment plan to acquire an oenological laboratory in France's Loire Valley, strengthening its regional technical and sales capabilities.

Key players operating in the wine fining agent market include AEB Group SpA, Agrovin, ATP Group, Dal Cin SpA, Enologica Vason, Erbslöh Geisenheim AG, Enartis, EVER s.r.l., Gusmer Enterprises Inc., LAFFORT, Lamothe-Abiet, Lesaffre, Presque Isle Wine Cellars, Sofralab, and Tidal Vision Products Inc.

Market Outlook

The wine fining agent market is expected to benefit from rising demand for premium wines, growing adoption of plant-based alternatives, and continued innovation in wine clarification and stabilization. However, concerns about over-fining, allergen labeling, and the shift toward additive-free beverages may influence product development and purchasing decisions.
