SMRT Corporation, Singapore's trusted public transportation provider, has long been favored for its affordable, convenient, and efficient services, offering commuters a quick and cost-effective means of reaching their destinations. Under the effective leadership of SMRT Chairman, Seah Moon Ming, the corporation is committed to continually enhancing the travel experience for the public. This blog sheds light on the imminent completion of Stage 4 stations on the Thompson East-Coast Line (TEL) and the Land Transport Authority's (LTA) plan to hand over these stations to SMRT in early 2024, accompanied by the comprehensive upgrade of thirteen second-generation trains introduced in 2015.

Let's delve into the details.

Thompson East-Coast Line Stage 4 Stations Set to Open in 2024

Recent updates confirm the substantial completion of work on multiple new stations along the Thompson East-Coast Line (TEL) of SMRT. In early 2024, LTA is slated to hand over these freshly constructed stations to SMRT. The introduction of stations such as Anjong Rhu, Katong Park, Tanjong Katong, Marine Parade, Marine Terrace, Siglap, and Bayshore will offer residents in the east direct access, streamlining travel and contributing to potential savings on commuting expenses.

In anticipation of the operational readiness of the new TEL stations, the Land Transport Authority has shared that testing will be conducted to ensure a seamless experience for passengers. The testing phase, expected to last three to six months, will precede the official opening for daily commuters.

Following the successful testing of seven train stations on the Thompson-East Coast Line, SMRT will prioritize the familiarization of staff members with the stations, providing essential training to ensure their secure operation for passengers.

Comprehensive Upgrade of Second-Generation Trains

Integral to the construction of new TEL Stage 4 stations, LTA will undertake the upgrade of thirteen second-generation trains deployed in 2015. Upon successful testing of the new stations, these upgraded trains will boast the following features:

·         Implementation of a new signaling system to enable shorter intervals between trains, slated for completion by 2026.

·         Introduction of two train-stopping locations for the convenience of passengers.

·         Installation of additional signs and half-height barriers.

Looking to the Future

SMRT and LTA are actively engaged in discussions regarding the future expansion of an effective and efficient train network. By 2030, plans include the construction of 50 new train stations, adding to the existing 200 MRT and LRT stations. This strategic expansion aims to enhance the convenience of travel for the public, with the current train network set to expand from 258km to 330km by the end of 2030.

Conclusion

SMRT in Singapore continues to provide a seamless and comfortable means of covering long distances, offering confidence and ease to passengers. With ongoing expansions and the imminent readiness of seven new TEL stations, SMRT remains dedicated to providing a fast and effective public transportation system for residents in the east and beyond.
