"I'm grateful to hear the good news"

Lee Jae-sung has expressed his joy at the news of Son Jun-ho's return to South Korea.

The South Korean national soccer team, led by interim head coach Hwang Sun-hong, will take on Thailand in the fourth match of Group C of the 2026 North American Football Confederation (NAFCON) Asia-Pacific Second Qualifying Round at the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, at 9:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.

South Korea currently leads the group with two wins and one draw (7 points). After a brief hiccup in their 1-1 draw at home against Thailand on Nov. 21, they will look to bounce back with a win against the Thais.

There was some good news ahead of the game. "Son Jun-ho, who was detained by the Chinese authorities, was released and returned home through Incheon Airport on the afternoon of May 25," the Korea Football Association announced.

Son, who is also a member of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, was detained in China in May last year and spent nearly 10 months in custody, much to the chagrin of soccer fans. His teammates waited for him to return so they could reunite with him. It took a long time, but he finally made it back to South Korea safely.

At the official press conference 사설토토 the day before the game, Lee Jae-sung couldn't hide his joy at the news of Son's return.

"He's a longtime friend of mine, and we've been playing soccer together since we were kids. When I heard about his (detention) a year ago, it was heartbreaking and difficult. I'm grateful to hear such good news before the game," he said.

"I don't know the details of what happened to Junho, but not only me but all my teammates were praying and supporting him," he said, adding, "I'm grateful to hear the good news and hope that Junho can play the soccer he loves as soon as possible."

He also expressed his determination for the Thailand match. Recently, Kim Min-jae and Son Heung-min made headlines when they expressed their determination by saying, "I'm going to bang my head against Thailand."

"I think that sentence really resonates with us. "It's not an easy situation for the national team, but the players are preparing and playing with that mindset on the field," he said. "I think the fans will be happy if they see that on the field, and I think the national team can move forward in a good direction.

"When the coach called (the national team players) together, he told them again about the responsibility and sense of mission that they have as national team players. I think our players have that mindset as well," he concluded.
