French President Emmanuel Macron said that he wants the European Union to guarantee the right to an abortion in its Charter of Fundamental Rights.

Macron attended a ceremony in Paris where Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti used a centuries-old press to seal the right to abortion into the French constitution, following an overwhelming vote by lawmakers on Monday.

The French President noted that his country has become the only country in the world to have a constitution that explicitly protects the right to abortion in all circumstances.

“And we will only rest when this promise is upheld everywhere in the world”, he said.

While in many parts of Europe, abortion has been legalized, some countries do impose restriction on women seeking termination of pregnancy.
